Even a car that no longer runs or is not worth repairing still has value. The question is how much, and from whom. The answer depends on what the buyer plans to do with it. A scrap yard wants the metal. A recycler wants the parts. A private buyer may want a project or a donor vehicle.
Knowing the value drivers lets you compare offers instead of accepting the first number you hear.
The main value drivers
Several things affect how much you can get for a junk car:
- Weight. Scrap yards price vehicles partly by the ton. Heavier vehicles generally bring more money.
- Valuable parts. Catalytic converters, engines, transmissions, alloy wheels, and electronics can be worth more than the scrap metal.
- Completeness. A complete car with all parts attached is usually worth more than a stripped shell.
- Condition. A car that is easy to tow or part out saves the buyer labour and money.
- Location. Local scrap metal prices, towing distance, and demand for parts vary by region.
- Current metal prices. Steel, aluminum, and copper prices fluctuate with commodity markets.
Scrap yard vs. parts recycler vs. private sale
Different buyers will pay differently:
- Scrap yards usually pay by weight and may charge for towing. Best for cars with little usable parts value.
- Auto recyclers may pay more if the vehicle has desirable parts that can be resold.
- Private buyers may pay the most if they need a specific part or project car, but the sale usually takes longer.
- Charities may accept donation vehicles and provide a tax receipt, which can be worthwhile in some situations.
How to get multiple quotes
Call at least two local scrap yards or recyclers and describe the vehicle accurately. Include the year, make, model, condition, whether it rolls and steers, and whether it has all major components. Ask whether the quote includes free towing and whether payment is on pickup or after processing.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not sign over the title until you have payment in hand. Do not accept a vague promise of future payment. Be honest about the condition; if the buyer arrives and finds the car is missing the catalytic converter or engine, the price may drop or the deal may be cancelled.
